There can hardly be many people who book a plane ticket in the hope of being placed between two people in the back row, writes the website The Conversation through CNN in a comment.

But according to a survey carried out by The Conversation, this is precisely the seat you should choose if you want to feel a little extra safe on the plane.

Therefore, it is the safest

First of all, sitting in the back row will give you quick access to the emergency exit.

Those in the middle row also have an emergency exit, but on the basis that fuel can be stored by the wings of the aircraft, these seats are not considered the safest.

At the same time, sitting furthest forward in the plane will also mean that you will be the first to hit the ground should the plane end up crashing.

The reason why it is safest to sit in the middle between two people is explained by the fact that the passengers next to you can cushion the impact if the plane hits the ground.

During the United Flight 232 accident in 1989 in the USA, a total of 184 passengers survived out of a total of 269 people on board the plane, writes CNN. According to the investigation, most of the survivors must have been seated further back in the plane.

Safer by plane than by car

According to an analysis done by the US National Safety Council, the chance of dying on board an airplane is equal to one in 205,552. On the other hand, if you look at driving a car, the chance is actually equal to one in 102.
