This is an announcement that may surprise more than one: Too popular for the good of its creators, a game is removed from a store and changes its name.
This is the surprise news of the week: the classic version of Angry Birds on Google Play will disappear due to its commercial “impact” on developer Rovio’s portfolio of other mobile games. The latter explains that the version of the game, which costs only a handful of euros and is devoid of microtransactions, is simply too popular, and that it therefore diverts the attention of the players from the sequels and spin-offs free- to-play games like Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Friends, and Angry Birds Journey, which come with their own set of microtransactions.
Recall that in the past, a first version of Angry Birds had already been made unavailable so that the developers could concentrate on newer titles. Those who have already downloaded the game can however keep it in their applications.
On Twitter, the Rovio studio explained about this withdrawal.
We have reviewed the business case for Rovio Classics: Angry Birds, and due to the game’s impact on our broader game portfolio, we have decided that Rovio Classics: Angry Birds will be delisting from the Google Play Store on Thursday. February 23. Additionally, the game will be renamed Red’s First Flight in the App Store pending further review.
And to add:We understand this is sad news for many fans, as well as the team that worked hard to make Rovio Classics: Angry Birds a reality. We are extremely grateful to Angry Birds fans who have shown their love for the brand and this game since the beginning.t”. Strange fact, the game will however remain available on the Apple App Store, under another name: “Red’s First Flight” (title in its original version).
