In connection with the Redmond operating system Windows 11, it is often criticized that the installation involves a number of programs that are not absolutely necessary. Now a developer has provided a slimmed down version. The ISO is only three GB in size.

The minimal edition is called Tiny11 and was developed by NTDev. The image is based on Windows 11 Pro 22H2 and requires eight gigabytes of storage space to be installed. In most cases, a standard installation occupies more than 20 gigabytes of storage space. In addition, Tiny11 can run on systems with as little as two gigabytes of RAM. Windows 11 requires at least four GB of RAM.

Unlike Windows 11 Pro, Tiny11 does not require a security module (TPM) to use Secure Boot. NTDev promises that no content from external sources has been included in the image. Although the slimmed-down edition does not receive any service, drivers and security updates can be downloaded via Windows Update. To reduce the size of the installation, the Windows Component Store (WinSxS) has been removed. New features and languages cannot be reloaded with Tiny11.

Modifications are not transparent

Of course, it should be noted that this is not an official project. Tiny11 should therefore not be used in connection with sensitive data. Some users have suggested that instead of an ISO file, the developer publishes a transparent script to be able to see the changes to the image and make them themselves. Tiny11 Windows should still be useful for some purposes. So the installation in a VM would be conceivable. The image stands up archive.org ready to download.
