Titanfall 3 ended up being converted into Apex Legends to jump on the battle royale bandwagon.
Despite the good reception from critics and the public of some aspects of Titanfall 2, such as its solo campaign, it was not enough for its sequel, Titanfall 3, will last a little more than a few months in development before being permanently cancelled. Respawn Entertainment then went on to develop Apex Legends, EA’s popular battle royale that is still active today with millions of players around the world.
Titanfall is one of those types of cases where the continuity of the series is canceled due to lack of support from the community, and once it has been cancelled, the players ask for its return. Now we have been able to know a little more about how was that period in which Titanfall was a reality at the Respawn offices.
What could have been and was not from Titanfall 3
In a conversation with The Burnettwork podcast (via comic book), Mohammad Alavi, a former Respawn Entertainment worker at the time of Titanfall 2, claimed that development of Titanfall 3 began right after the release of the second part. The game was in development 10 months in which an attempt was made to improve in all aspects what was seen in Titanfall 2, but it was finally canceled and reused to bring Apex Legends to life.
“Titanfall 2 came out, did what it did, and we said, ‘Okay, let’s do Titanfall 3,'” says the creative. “We worked on Titanfall 3 for… ten months. We had new technology for this, we had various missions up and running, we had a first demo that was on par to be just as good if not better than what we had before.”
The reason why Titanfall 3 was canceled and remade into Apex Legends was because of its multiplayer sectionwhich seemed to not be working as well as the campaign, so it was decided to take the example of the PUBG phenomenon that dominated at that time and make a battle royale game.
Today, Respawn Entertainment has further diversified its developments and we not only have shooters, but also the remarkable Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
