Will the new tobacco price increase fight against smoking? As of Monday, May 1, for several brands, the package price now reaches at least 11 euros. “It can go to 15.16 euros. If you want to smoke, it’s an addiction, it’s a craving. We don’t control it”, says a woman. In addition to the difficulty of getting rid of it, there is the fact that cigarettes have a positive image in society.
Towards a package at 15 euros?
It appeals to younger generations and women. There is a resumption of smoking for them. So, the associations are campaigning for a price that would be around 15 euros per package. “If we arrive at a package at 15 euros in 2027, (…) the smoker would be able to say to himself: ‘It will increase. I have to prepare myself. I have to stop.'”, explains Professor Loïc Josseran, president of the Alliance Against Tobacco. These taxes on cigarettes are not enough to offset the health and environmental cost of tobacco. For that, it would be necessary to go to 40 euros per package.
