With the start of the year and the peak holiday season, traffic fines had a new adjustment of 12.3% and thus completed a 124% increase in the last 12 months. Now crossing a red light, exceeding the speed limit or driving without VTV can cost up to $204,200.
According to the new resolution of the Buenos Aires Government, since January 1, the fines experienced an increase of 12.3% and therefore the most serious offenses will have a penalty of between $61,260 and $204,200, depending on the infraction itself; although one of the highest will be refusing to take a breathalyzer test: $245,040.
After a rise of around 40% during 2021, the different increases that gasoline had this year -which is what the Government is governed by to adjust the fines- caused the increase in the value of gasoline to shoot up to 124.3%. violations compared to January 2022, a number well above inflation.
The provincial Executive ordered an adjustment of the Fixed Units (UF) that are used to determine each infraction: before the update, each UF module was $181.80 and now it is $204.20. It is about the value of a liter of Infinia gasoline at the Automóvil Club Argentino de La Plata, but as fuels continue to rise, there will be a new increase in fines, possibly in March.
The authorities consider driving without a qualifying license, crossing a traffic light with a red light, driving on the shoulder, running away or refusing to provide documentation, driving drunk and having the exhaust pipe free as serious offenses. There, the fines start at $30,630, such as offenses that have to do with speeding, although in some cases they can reach a maximum of $204,200.
While driving without having carried out the Vehicle Technical Verification (VTV) will be sanctioned with a fine of 300 UF to 1000 UF, that is to say from $61,200 to $204,200. However, due to the shortage of shifts to be able to renew the wafers, the Buenos Aires Government enabled those citizens who prove that they had obtained a shift to carry out the VTV prior to its expiration to circulate. Lastly, driving around using a cell phone involves fines starting at $20,420, driving a vehicle using headphones for $10,210, as well as traveling in a vehicle with more passengers than allowed.
