Do you still have old mobile phones lying around? Among them could possibly be a real collector’s item. We’ll tell you if it’s worth selling.
In order to be technically up to date, we spend hundreds of euros on the latest smartphones. Maybe we should check whether we could use one of our old cell phones to pay for the new one? In fact, devices from the first generation of mobile phones can have immense collector’s value – especially if they are still in their original packaging. We researched Ebay and put together the top 5 most valuable mobile phones.
Platz 1: Motorola DynaTAC 8000x
Owners of the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x won the lottery. The first commercially available cellular phone came out in 1983 and cost about $4,000. It weighed one kilo and was 33 centimeters long, not for your pocket. Nowadays, the device can up to Achieve 8,000 eurosif it is in very good condition – and of course subject to finding an interested buyer.
In Switzerland you can bid for a Motorola DynaTAC 8000x (year of manufacture 1983) with original operating instructions, case and charging unit on Ebay starting at a starting price of 85,000 euros. Anyone who deposits 120,000 euros can buy it immediately. According to Ebay, no bid has been received yet.
Notes on the information
The top 5 most valuable cell phones was created by comparing prices on popular online marketplaces such as Ebay. It does not claim to be correct, but represents a snapshot of the market. Whether the mobile phones listed here actually achieve the required sum when sold depends on whether a paying buyer can be found.
Platz 2: iPhone 2G
When Apple released the first iPhone, the iPhone 2G, in 2007, it marked the beginning of a new smart age. From now on, it was no longer just about making calls or sending text messages. You actually had a small computer in your pocket that was extremely easy to use with apps.
The iPhone 2G is technically as good as useless today. Nevertheless, collectors pay a lot of money for a first-generation iPhone. The value depends heavily on the condition of the device. A used iPhone 2G costs around 150 euros. Unused or even originally packaged smartphones can bring in up to 2,000 euros. Ebay is currently one for 3.959 Euro traded.
3rd place: Nokia 8110
The Nokia 8110 came on the market in 1996 and was cleverly advertised in 1999 by the cult film “Matrix” and became world famous. The protective cover for the keyboard can be slid open. Because the Nokia 8110 was curved, it was also known as the “matrix banana”. At that time, customers had to pay a little less than 1000 euros for the device.
Owned one in the ’90s? That could pay off now, because models that are still in their original packaging can up to three times as much as the original selling price. However, if the cell phone is used, the price drop is great, then there is a maximum of 100 euros.

4th place: Nokia 8800
Telephones from the Finnish manufacturer Nokia were absolute cult in the 1990s and at the beginning of this millennium. Then Apple came with the first smartphone and initiated the demise of the mobile phone manufacturer. What had appeared on Nokia phones up until then can be valuable today. Like the Nokia 8800, for example. It came onto the market in 2005 and was considered a luxury cell phone because of its scratch-resistant screen and the smart sliding mechanism of the protective cover.
