The streaming service Paramount+ has only been available in Germany since December 2022. Since then, the criticism of the offer has not abated – it’s all about the poor picture and sound quality. New problems are now emerging.

And this time they revolve around annual subscriptions. A reader drew our attention to this. It is also about the relationship between Paramount+ and Apple. As it now appears, Paramount+ would like to avoid paying the commission share to Apple and does not recognize payments via in-app purchases.

What happened?

A reader reported that he was unable to log into his account after the 7-day Paramount+ trial. He had used the app on the iPad and also bought the annual subscription offered to him there for EUR 79.99 via an in-app purchase after the end of the test phase. Apple deducted the amount. Nothing more happened. There was no indication that something had gone wrong, nor that there were any problems with the payment. Apple confirmed the subscription and it showed up regularly in the booked subscriptions in Apple’s Settings app.

But it didn’t work. When the reader wanted to log in, he was only offered another subscription in the Paramount+ app – a month for 7.99 euros or a year for 79.99 euros.

Restore iTunes Purchases

There is also a link in the app that says “Restore iTunes Skid”. At first the person concerned thought nothing bad of the difficulties that had arisen and wanted to try to recover. But every time I clicked the “Restore iTunes Purchases” link, the Paramount+ app crashed. So the next idea was to contact Paramount+ support. Then came the disillusionment: the email contact was quick, but not really helpful. The company confirmed that Paramount+ does not currently accept in-app purchases:

That was as of January 25, 2023. After Apple was contacted by phone, it was clear that this was not an isolated case and that their support team was already aware of the problem. So it was promised that the money would be refunded. This also worked within three working days, Apple refunded 79.99 euros.

Interestingly, there is little feedback from users who are also affected. However, according to Apple, it is a known issue and there is no discussion with the customer about the refund, it is initiated immediately.

But how do you subscribe now?

In order to take out a subscription, you would have to select the desired plan in the web browser on your PC. But our reader preferred to do without it after this bad experience.

We had fun and signed up for the Paramount+ trial again today via iPhone. It’s not really a big surprise that during the registration process you are still asked to decide on a subscription plan. Of course it’s still an in-app purchase. We’re excited to see what happens after the seven-day free trial ends.
