Trump's lawyers ask that the trial for trying to overturn the election result be in 2026

The Prosecutor’s Office proposed the trial for January 2, 2024 and the defense considers that this date seeks to prevent its proper preparation

Former US President Donald Trump’s legal team has requested that the federal trial for attempting to overturn the 2020 election result be held in April 2026 to give them enough time to prepare a good defense.

In addition, they have considered that the proposal of special prosecutor Jack Smith to celebrate it on January 4, 2024 seeks to prevent a correct preparation and its consequent defense.

“The government’s objective is clear: to deny (former) President Trump and his lawyer a fair ability to prepare for trial. The court must deny the government’s request,” the former president’s lawyers have published, according to CNN.

Trump himself has assured this Thursday in a television program that Smith is “seeking a faster trial schedule than most minor crimes without documents and requesting only four months from the beginning of the discovery to the selection of the jury.”

In addition, the defense has argued that the date proposed by the special prosecutor would be in conflict with the other cases facing the former president.

The trial on the alleged bribery of the porn actress Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels, will begin in March 2024, while the case of the classified documents is dated and the process for the case of trying to interfere in the presidential elections of 2020 in the state of Georgia are scheduled for May of that same year.

“(Former) President Trump must prepare for each of these trials in the coming months. All are independently complex and will require substantial work to defend himself. Several will likely require President Trump to be present at some or all of the trial proceedings,” has argued the team of lawyers.

“Undoubtedly, (former) President Trump’s obligation to diligently prepare for this case does not end due to other pending matters. However, the court can, and should, consider the practical effects that these parallel prosecutions will have on the ability of (former) President Trump to meet the extraordinarily short deadlines the government is proposing,” the lawyers added.
