There arises for many the question: How long can I actually wish a Happy New Year without it sounding silly.

In 2023 it will take place on January 22nd. Then it is advisable to use the appropriate New Year’s greeting. It is: Xinnian kuaile, pronounced roughly Siin-niän quai-la.

Otherwise, certain rules of conduct apply, those of the German writer Adolph Franz Friedrich Ludwig Freiherr Knigge come. They are not definitive. And yet: New Year’s greetings, such as “Frohes Neues” or “Happy New Year”, can be used until around mid-January. Or: change the wording a bit and use “all the best”, for example. You can also add that you haven’t had the opportunity to do this before: “We haven’t even seen each other before. I wish you every success and all the best for the coming months.” This is also a good way to start a conversation.
