Digitization State Secretary Florian Tursky (ÖVP) is in favor of an AI authority in Austria. “We will need them in some way,” he said in the “Tiroler Tageszeitung” (“TT”, Saturday edition) during a study trip to Silicon Valley (USA).

If necessary, this is needed for Austria alone, one will not be able to wait for Europe. In addition to the dangers, Tursky also referred to the advantages of artificial intelligence.

“No long-term own regulation”

He cannot yet say what such an authority would look like. “But I don’t want any long-term regulation in Austria. And that doesn’t mean that we can stop innovation,” he said, according to TT.

One of the biggest challenges is developing a kind of seal of approval for the AI. According to Tursky, all companies visited on the study trip are aware that regulation is necessary.

In the USA, they also look to Europe in this regard. In his opinion, it is “dangerous” to only talk about problematic applications. AI also has “an incredible potential to improve our lives”, for example in medical applications.
