An apparent bug in Twitter’s system allows former users who had the verification badge to re-view the blue check into their accounts — at least temporarily.

The blue badge reappears on previously verified accounts when editing the profile bio. To the relief of those who don’t want to be mistaken for a Twitter Blue subscriber, the badge disappears when refreshing the page. The failure that allows you to view the old verification stamp on Twitter was registered on Monday (1st).

Seal blue reappears in bug

In our test, the blue check appeared with any changes to fields on the profile page. The platform even returned to inform the reason for the account being verified. “This account is verified as a person of note in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category” — in this case, the old description used for journalists.

The badge disappeared after a few moments of browsing the social network, refreshing the page or posting a new tweet. But with each new profile edit, the check reappeared on the account.

Verification badges and Twitter Blue

Twitter removed pre-existing verification badges on April 21st as a way to enforce Twitter Blue subscription. The response from users was a campaign against the paid service and the new policies adopted by the current owner of the platform, billionaire Elon Musk.

As a result, Twitter Blue registers a slow pace of new subscriptions. Since then, Musk has taken other unpopular decisions, such as forcibly redistributing the badge to celebrities with more than 1 million followers and prioritizing verified (read paid) accounts on the social network.
