Two-wheeler sales fell 0.9% in Europe in 2022, with 1.2 million units sold.

The two-wheeler sales fell slightly in Europe in 2022 with 1.2 million units sold (-0.9%), according to figures published on Monday by the association of manufacturers (ACEM). While the car market was paralyzed, 950,000 motorcycles (+0.1%) were registered in the first four markets of the European Union and the United Kingdom in 2022, compared to 880,700 in 2020 and 949,480 in 2021.

Sales growth in Spain and the United Kingdom was tempered by stable figures in Italy, the EU’s largest market, and in Germany, and a sharp decline in France: -7% for new two-wheelers and – 5% for occasions.

Increase in sales of electric two-wheelers

After a boom with the start of the Covid pandemic, scooter sales also slowed slightly (-3.4%), to 255,900 units in the six main European markets (France, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Spain).

With 85,000 sales, the share of electric vehicles continues to increase: it represented a quarter of scooter sales in France in 2022, and almost half in Belgium and the Netherlands. As for motorcycles, electric ones still represent less than 5% of sales, in particular because of their price, and their autonomy deemed insufficient.
