While Ubisoft is having a rather difficult start to the year in various aspects, the situation is clearly not improving since the employees of the Parisian subsidiary have just called for a strike.

A wind of protest that shakes many sectors

While a new episode of major strikes is looming in France in this context of pension reform, the video game sector is no exception, but for slightly different reasons. It is through an incisive press release that the Solidaires Informatique union, the first defender of digital workers, design offices and video games, responds to Yves Guillemot and his statements last week.

Named “The ball is in our court (but the money remains in his pocket)”, the union statement denounces the lack of responsibility of the CEO of Ubisoft and the concessions he is asking employees. According to the union, the message of Yves Guillemot hides above all reductions in staff, overtime, wage cuts under the pretext that the future of the company depends solely on the investment of employees.

The video game industry is not a model of well-being and respect for employees, at least in large groups, and therefore, Solidaire Informatiques has expressed these specific requests:

  • An immediate 10% increase for all salaries, regardless of annual increases, to offset inflation. With the hundreds of millions of euros obtained from Tencent, there is money in the employers’ coffers.
  • The improvement of working conditions, with in particular the implementation of the 4-day week.
  • Transparency on changes in the workforce both locally and globally.
  • A firm commitment to disguised dismissals and a condemnation against abusive managerial controversies that push employees to resign.

Pending a response and action from management, the Solidaires Informatique union is therefore calling on Ubisoft Paris employees to strike on Friday January 27 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. It remains to be seen whether this action will have an impact on the working conditions of Ubisoft employees.
