According to British intelligence services, Russia has reduced its troops and attacks in eastern Ukraine in favor of reserves for the battle for the town of Bakhmut. Regular army units and Wagner Group fighters would continue to make “creeping progress” there, the British Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday.

Currently, the front line in the city center largely corresponds to the railway line. To the south, Ukrainian units would hold off the Russians along the old main road leading west out of the city.

“For both sides, the exact sequence of a major withdrawal of their units in the Bakhmut area has become a critical issue,” it said in London. Ukraine wants to unleash offensive forces, while Russia wants to regenerate its reserves. Fierce fighting continued along the entire front in Donbass.

The British Ministry of Defense has published daily information on the course of the war since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, citing intelligence information. In doing so, the British government wants to both counter the Russian portrayal and keep allies in line. Moscow accuses London of a disinformation campaign. (dpa)
