Ukrainian local authorities have announced at least five civilian deaths and 16 injuries after fresh strikes on the southern city of the country.

New Russian strikes killed at least five civilians on Tuesday and injured 16 in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, local authorities said. A first assessment, which reported six dead and twelve injured, was revised by the municipal administration, which established it at “five people killed and sixteen hospitalized”.

“Right during the speech of the bloodthirsty dictator Putin, the enemy struck residential buildings, critical infrastructure,” spokesman for the Southern Regional Command of the Ukrainian army, Vladislav Nazarov, wrote on Telegram.

He added that a hospital, a day care centre, “the local market and public transport had been bombed”, denouncing the fact that “in the middle of the street, in their own homes and in their workplaces, civilians from Kherson were killed and wounded.”

“The Russian army kills without mercy”

According to Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson regional military administration, Russian troops targeted the city with multiple Grad rocket launchers and 20 explosions were recorded.

The images broadcast after this strike show bodies, one covered by a tarpaulin to hide it, lying on the ground near a bus stop and a destroyed supermarket.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky quickly condemned the attack.

“The Russian army fires massively on Kherson. Once again, it mercilessly kills the civilian population”, he denounced.

He added that “the world has no right to forget for a moment that Russian cruelty and aggression know no bounds.”

Russian fire on the Kherson region has been regular since the withdrawal of Moscow troops from the city of the same name in mid-November last.
