The rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Enrique Graue, informed that he has convened the Ethics Committee to determine the corresponding sanction for the plagiarism of the thesis involving Minister Yasmín Esquivel.

“The plagiarism of a thesis is not a minor thing, it is a reprehensible conduct, a usurpation of ideas and talents and calls into question the ethics and morals of those who commit it,” criticizes Graue.

The rector added that “shortly I will be convening the University Ethics Committee that derives from the Honor Commission of the University Council to review the opinions and documentation from which the Academic and Scientific Integrity Committee of the FES Aragón was gathered and the evidence that continue to emerge for their analysis and thus accommodate the due process to which everyone is entitled,” he said in his message broadcast on the social networks of the highest house of studies.

Once the due process is finished, the university will convene a session of the Honor Commission “to analyze the possible actions to be carried out,” he announced.

“Let it be very clear: the rectory deposited in my person in no way evades its responsibility. I act and will continue to do so within the framework of university legislation. I cannot and should not go beyond what the regulations require of me,” Graue explained about the reason why any consequence on the minister has not yet been disclosed.

Likewise, the UNAM announced a series of measures that it has taken regarding the issue at the beginning of the year:

  • It was approved that all written theses must be analyzed with technological tools before going to court;
  • the correction of legal gaps in university legislation is analyzed;
  • the contract of the thesis advisor Martha Rodríguez was terminated; Y
  • a search is carried out in TESIUNAM to look for more cases of plagiarism like this.

Esquivel’s plagiarism

In recent days, a UNAM community made up of students, teachers, researchers and members of the University Council demanded that the university withdraw Yasmín Esquivel Mossa’s bachelor’s degree and assured that it was possible to do so; despite the fact that the general lawyer had denied this possibility since there were no statutes that allowed it.

Likewise, the Faculty of Higher Studies Aragón notified Martha Rodríguez, a professor who advised Esquivel’s thesis in 1987, about the reasons for her dismissal: lack of university morality.

Rodríguez would have admitted sharing the work “Ineffectiveness of the Unions in the Trusted Workers of Article 123 Section A” —originally published by Edgar Báez Gutiérrez in 1986— among various students for learning purposes.

In addition to the termination of the thesis advisor’s contract, the FES Aragón ruled that the work with which Yasmín Esquivel obtained her law degree “is a substantial copy” of the one published by Baéz Gutiérrez a year earlier.
