After the seizure of the building of the General Directorate of the College of Sciences and Humanities (CCH) and the General Directorate of Budget (PGD), led by a group of masked people, the authorities of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) issued a statement where condemned the violent acts that caused property damage.

“The UNAM condemns acts of vandalism and damage to university assets, under the principle that a protest cannot be a justification for carrying out acts typical of criminal organizations and that, basically, they intend to destabilize the University”, the official document reads.

According to the report issued on the official website of the university entity, close to 40 people They entered the two buildings on the afternoon of May 8, 2023 and “retained administrative staff against their will and caused significant damage to both buildings.”

As reported, the hooded people carried out various damages such as breaking glass, window protections and electricity cables, as well as the internet. In addition, there was damage to computer, electronic, photography, video equipment and furniture in the offices of the two university units, although they did not confirm if there was theft of equipment or materials.

During the occupation of the buildings, the authorities would have offered to establish a dialogue with the hooded persons with the intention of knowing and attending to the student demands. However, the protesters would have denied the possibility.

And it is that, in the course of the afternoon, a group of protesters was present at the facilities located south of Mexico City (CDMX). Before entering the buildings of the two university dependencies, they made blockades that they maintained for several minutes in both directions of Avenida de los South Insurgents.

According to unofficial reports, after lifting the blockade on the road, the protesters advanced towards the University City and entered the facilities of the General Directorate of CCHwhere they also painted on the walls.

Among the demands made known by some members of the group of nonconformists was the requirement that the authorities guarantee security inside the campuses of the Colleges of Sciences and Humanities (CCH). And it is that in recent years cases of sexual violence, such as abuse and harassment, have been made known in schools of the upper secondary level of the UNAM.

On the other hand, they also sought the creation of an ombudsman for students belonging to the LGBT+ community, as well as for women victims of any type of violence on the campuses of the educational institution.
