At least ten people were killed Saturday night in a shooting outside a Chinese New Year celebration in a city near Los Angeles in the United States.
According to US authorities and media, the shooting occurred in the town of Monterey Park, around 10:30 p.m. (3:30 a.m. in Argentina), during a Lunar New Year celebration that attracted thousands of people.
It took place in a bowling alley and the shooter is a man, Los Angeles County Police Sgt. Bob Boese said today, CNN reported.
Monterey Park is a city of about 60,000 people, where about 65 percent are of Asian descent. It is located about 16 kilometers from downtown Los Angeles.
Seung Won Choi, owner of the Clam House seafood barbecue restaurant across the street from the shooting, told the Los Angeles Times that three people ran into his restaurant and asked him to lock the doors.
Won Choi added that people told him there was a man with a machine gun, and he said he believed the shooting took place in a nightclub around 10 p.m. According to testimony, the shooter was carrying several rounds of ammunition to reload.
A two-day festival that is one of the biggest Lunar New Year events in Southern California kicked off in and around Los Angeles on Saturday. The area was full of people celebrating and going to eat at different places.
