Up to $70 for a bottle: the price of this popular hot sauce skyrockets

Would you pay $70 for a jar of your favorite hot sauce? If you are a lover of Sriracha sauce, you may have to give up looking for it in supermarkets and pay an astronomical amount.

For now, gone are those days where you could get it for $4 on the shelves.

The reason is that supplies to make it remain limited, warned one of the most popular Sriracha makers in the United States in the face of new shortages of the popular product.

Due to the continuing shortages, bottles of Huy Fong’s sauce have begun to be sold online at astronomical prices and some are even taking the bottles from restaurants. Although Huy Fong is not the only maker of Sriracha, it is the most popular.

On Amazon, sellers are taking advantage to sell it at exorbitant prices. A two-pack of 17-ounce bottles of Sriracha can’t be found for less than $114, if you’re lucky enough to find it in stock. A pack of four 28-ounce bottles sells for $200.

Huy Fong’s popular chili garlic sauce also sells for inflated prices in eBay. They are asking from $39.98 for the 17-ounce bottle and up to $70 for the 28-ounce bottle.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE MANUFACTURE OF THE SAUCE?

Although Huy Fong and the other manufacturers have not clarified what specific challenges are limiting their production, this is not the first time there has been a shortage of Sriracha on shelves in the country.

In June 2022, Huy Fong Foods warned that a shortage of chillies was limiting its ability to produce several of its highly-demanded sauces, including its Chili Garlic and Sambal Oelek. The California-based company cited weather conditions as part of the problem.

“Currently, due to weather conditions affecting the quality of the peppers, we are facing a more serious shortage of chilli,” the manufacturer said at the time.
