US and Israel discuss moving to a different phase of the war

MIAMI.- The US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, met on Tuesday with the Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer, to discuss the move “to a different phase” of the war between Israel y Hamasaccording to a White House official.

The meeting served to discuss steps to improve the humanitarian situation in war-torn Gaza and minimize the harm suffered by civilians, the official said on condition of anonymity.

It was also intended to be an opportunity to talk about “the transition to a different phase of the war to focus on high-value Hamas targets,” the official said, referring to the Palestinian Islamist group.

This meeting occurs after the Security Council of the HIM agreed last week on a resolution calling for speeding up the delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip “at scale.”

That territory, where 2.4 million people reside, faces serious shortages of water, food, medicine and fuel, with only limited aid income.

Hamas attack on Israel

The war in Gaza was triggered when the Hamas terrorist group stormed southern Israel on October 7, killing some 1,140 people.

They took 250 hostages, of which 129 remain in Gaza. Efforts to return them to their homes was also one of the topics of the meeting between Sullivan and Dermer.

After the attack, Israel launched a military response by air and land that left more than 20,000 dead, especially women and children, according to the Ministry of Health of the Strip, which is governed by the extremist group Hamas.

The meeting also allowed Israel and the United States to discuss eventual “governance and security in Gaza, a political horizon for the Palestinians, and continuing the work of normalization and integration,” the White House official said.
