US announces $345 million defense aid package for Taiwan

MADRID, 29 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Friday an arms aid package for Taiwan worth up to 345 million dollars (about 313 million euros), within the framework of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (FAA). .

Biden has thus delegated to the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, “to order the withdrawal of up to 345 million dollars in defense articles and services from the Department of Defense, and education and military training to provide assistance to Taiwan”, as collects a statement published by the White House.

Beyond these general considerations, the press release issued by the US government does not include any specific list of the resources and weapons systems through which the aforementioned aid is articulated.

This announcement comes after the leader of the US Executive and the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, assured this Thursday – after a meeting in Washington – that the maintenance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is ” of vital importance” as it is a “fundamental” area for global prosperity.

Already in mid-July, the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, spoke in the same terms, defending the “freedom of navigation” in the South China Sea.

Likewise, at the end of June the US State Department approved a possible arms sale to Taiwan for a value of 440 million dollars (about 400 million euros), a decision that China “firmly” opposed.

The tension between the United States and China has also increased in recent years in relation to the situation in the Taiwan Strait and the growing pressure exerted by Beijing on the island, which it considers a province under its sovereignty.
