US Embassy in Haiti issues security alert for employees

DRAFTING.- The Embassy of the United States in Haiti issued a security alert for its employees due to shots in the vicinity of that diplomatic headquarters.

“The Embassy has established temporary travel restrictions. All embassy personnel are confined to the embassy premises until further notice,” the message posted on their website says.

Likewise, the US nation called on its citizens to follow some security measures, such as avoiding the area; demonstrations and large gatherings of people; not trying to drive through roadblocks and if there is an obstacle on the road, it suggests turning around and heading to a safe area.

Since last July, the United States Embassy in Haiti has issued several alerts and has reduced its diplomatic staff due to the violence in that country.

It is recalled that on August 16, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, insisted on his call “to member states to deploy a multinational force not belonging to the United Nations, made up of special police forces and military support units », in a 12-page letter dated Monday, consulted by AFP.

In his letter, Guterres advocates that said force act bilaterally in cooperation with the Government of Haiti and have the endorsement of the Security Council.

“Addressing the security situation in Haiti requires a series of coercive law enforcement measures, including the active use of force in targeted police operations against heavily armed gangs,” the secretary general wrote.
