US supports Haiti's request to send a special force to the country

Washington.- The United States government assured this Wednesday that it supports Haiti’s request to send a special multinational aid force to the country.

During a meeting with the Prime Minister of Haiti, Ariel Henry, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, gave his support to the proposal and reaffirmed the “urgency” of reaching a consensus that allows “reestablishing the democratic order” in the Caribbean country.

Henry and Blinken agreed on the importance of “deploying a multinational or peacekeeping force” to Haiti “to allow the National Police” to restore peace, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement. .

Blinken’s meeting with his Caribbean counterpart took place in Trinidad and Tobago, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Caribbean Community (Caricom).

The position of the head of US diplomacy comes days after the Secretary General of the United Nations Organization (UN), António Guterres, insisted to the international community on the need to form a force of this type in Haiti and requested ” volunteers”.

The Haitian government officially requested last October the intervention of an international mission to help the National Police against the gangs, an initiative that has not yet materialized due to the lack of finding a State willing to lead it.

According to data compiled by the UN, violence by gangs in Haiti reached levels not seen in decades in 2022, with a sharp increase in homicides, to a total of 2,183, and 1,359 kidnappings, more than double the previous year. .
