Video games and the use of AIs have met head on. As has happened with other artistic disciplines, there is no turning back. While some see it as the ultimate tool of content creation, others see a growing problem. And Valve seems to be one of the latter, since it has started to ban games on Steam created by AI.
The user posting u/potterharry97 and Reddit It has caught the attention of a good number of people. The developer says that he sent a version of his game to Steam with some elements “obviously AI generated“, which would be replaced by elements created by hand in future versions. Valve’s response was to deny approval of the game.
After review, we have identified intellectual property in (Game Name Here) that appears to belong to one or more third parties. Specifically, (Game Name Here) contains AI-generated art assets that appear to rely on copyrighted material owned by third parties.
As the legal ownership of such AI-generated art is unclear, we cannot ship your game while it contains these AI-generated assets, unless you can affirmatively confirm that you own the rights to all IP used in the dataset you trained the AI to create the assets in your game. – Steam’s response.
Valve raises the question about whether the developer has the source art rights that the AI uses to learn and build on them when making the elements that the game presents.
