Opposition candidate González Urrutia leads Maduro in polls ten days before Venezuelan elections

On July 28, Venezuela will hold its first elections in 25 years, an event that many hope will mark a significant change in the country’s political direction. Edmundo González Urrutia, a candidate for the Democratic Unitary Platform, He leads the polls with 59.1% of voting intention, compared to 24.6% for the current president Nicolás Maduro.

Although Maduro has been surprised by these numbers, Chavismo still believes in a possible comeback, based on anthropological studies that position him as the “strong” candidate, as opposed to the perception of González as “weak.”

In the context of these elections, Maduro has announced that Venezuela will resume dialogue with the United States, in an attempt to improve bilateral relations less than a month before the elections. In parallel, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez was injured after a tree fell during Hurricane Beryl, an incident that has captured the public’s attention.

On the other hand, María Corina Machado, a prominent opposition figure who was disqualified from running for office by a Supreme Court decision, remains an influential voice in Venezuelan politics. Although he cannot compete, his popularity is high and he is actively supporting González Urrutia in the campaign, which began on July 4.The rallies have been packed and the campaign has focused on promises of economic, social and institutional recovery.
