“Faced with the possibility of a free and fair election, Maduro is absolutely weak, vincible,” said Juan Guaido on Monday.

Venezuelan opponent Juan Guaido, who held the symbolic post of “interim president” until the end of 2022, believes that Venezuelan head of state Nicolas Maduro, whom he calls a “dictator”, “can be beaten” if the opposition overcomes its divisions.

“The problem is not Maduro,” he said. “The problem today is to reunite the democratic alternative. Once the democratic alternative is reunited, Maduro can be beaten 100% (…). Faced with the possibility of a free and fair election, Maduro is absolutely weak, vincible,” Juan Guaido said.

Very divided, the opposition rightly put an end on December 30 to the “presidency” and the “interim government” of Guaido, former president of the National Assembly, who had proclaimed himself president in 2019.

Presidential of 2024 in sight

Guaido’s “presidency” without real power, supported by both the opposition and part of the international community, was intended to oust Maduro from power. But that support had waned as his goal seemed further and further away.

The opposition must organize a primary this year before the presidential election of 2024. “There is a process of recomposition, reconstruction (…), I think we have an opportunity just around the corner, it is the primary. My candidate is the union”, continued Juan Guaido, refusing to indicate whether he would be a candidate or not.

Power and opposition have been negotiating again since November in Mexico. The main issue in these negotiations is the presidential election of 2024.

“We (the main opposition leaders) are all ineligible, in detention or in exile. So we have to see how it goes in Mexico City,” he added.
