Video | An attack on an African-American man escalates into a pitched battle in an Alabama port

A series of blows to an African-American man sparked a bitter fight at a port in Montgomery, Alabama. The brawl brought with it fights between women, men and even a blow to the head with a chair. Local authorities identified three white men as the detonators of the violent episode that occurred this Saturday afternoon.

Montgomery Police Chief Darryl Albert on Tuesday identified the defendants as 48-year-old Richard Roberts; Allen Todd, 23, and Zachery Shipman, 25. One of the suspects is in custody and the other two are expected to turn themselves in to authorities shortly.

Videos recorded by the public show that Damien Pickett, the beaten employee, tried last Saturday to direct the movement of a private flat-bottomed boat carrying white men to make way for the Harriett II Riverboat.

The confrontation occurred on racial grounds, however, investigators did not find sufficient evidence to charge those responsible for hate crimes or inciting a riot, authorities said.
