WashingtonA San Francisco courthouse released police body camera footage Friday showing the frantic seconds when a hammer-wielding intruder attacked Paul Pelosi, 82, the husband of Nancy Pelosi, in the lobby of the couple’s home in Pacific Heights in the early hours of October 1. 28, 2022.

The court also released a recording of a 911 call made by Pelosi while the intruder was in the home, shortly after he broke in and woke Pelosi up. Additionally, the court released Capitol Police surveillance footage of Pelosi’s residence and an audio recording of the police questioning of the suspect, David DePape.

Video of the attack captures the moments officers approached the home, entered, and found the assailant and Mr. Pelosi standing calmly, each with one hand on a large hammer. After police demanded they drop it, the intruder seized control of the hammer, raised it above his head, and smashed it into Pelosi’s skull, though the impact itself occurred off-camera. As the officers tried to subdue the assailant, Pelosi lay motionless on her side.

Pelosi spent six days in a San Francisco hospital and underwent surgery for a fractured skull.

The suspect, David DePape, faces numerous felony charges in state court, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He also faces federal charges of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on a family member of a federal official. If convicted, he would face the possibility of life in prison. He has pleaded not guilty and the next hearing in the case is scheduled for February 23, when a trial date will be set.
