At the Google I/O 2023, Google presented other interesting projects in addition to new hardware such as the Pixel Fold or Pixel Tablet and innovations in the field of AI. These include a new prototype from Project Starline, a technology designed to bring people closer together digitally. As early as 2021, Google presented the first version of Project Starline, which could revolutionize virtual meetings in the future: users see a real-time, life-size 3D model of their conversation partner on a screen. This is intended to give the impression that you are sitting directly across from this person – even if they are miles away.

Compared to the prototype shown at the time, the new version is now significantly smaller and therefore more suitable for everyday use. The technology has also been simplified: while the old prototype still required a whole range of special cameras and sensors, now only a few “normal cameras” are required. Google justifies this with advances in the areas of AI and machine learning, but without revealing any details.

The video also features employees from T-Mobile and Salesforce, who already have access to the latest prototype. When and if Project Starline will actually ever be ready for the market is still unclear.
