Dark fantasy fans know this. The genre is dominated from the head, the shoulders, and the sword by a singular work which, by its mere presence, has forever changed Japanese comics. Berserk by the late Kentaro Miura has no equal in 2023. However, a manga has been able to trace its own destiny: Goblin Slayer.
The hunt resumes in 2023
2022 was a pivotal year for simulcast (Simultaneous Broadcast) in France, and in general in the West. Crunchyroll formalizes its merger with Wakanim in the spring. The catalog of the second mentioned SVOD service is slowly but surely sliding towards the orange-draped streaming platform. However, the animated series that brings us together today is only available on Wakanim while waiting to see it land on Crunchyroll.
Goblin Slayer is originally a light novel written by Kumo Kagyu and illustrated by Noboru Kannatsuki. Published since February 2016, the saga is adapted in manga from May 2016, and thus appears in the Monthly Big Gangan. Still in progress, this seinen now has 13 bound volumes (for 16 light novels). In parallel, a second “paper” version comes to life under the pen of Masahiro Ikeno between May 2018 and May 2019 for a total of 2 volumes. Goblin Slayer goes through the “anime” box in December 2018 with the controls White Fox”’ (Steins;Gate, Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, Akame ga Kill!). 15 months later, a film entitled Goblin’s Crown and produced by the same Japanese animation studio continues the adventures of Crève-Goblin.
Long awaited, Goblin Slayer Season 2 is now a reality. Our somewhat limited slayer and his troop of motley adventurers will return to service in 2023 without further details. For the occasion, a first trailer was released (see above). We were also able to learn that this second burst of episodes is supported by Liden Films, the studios already in charge of the animated adaptation of Tokyo Revengers. Goblin Slayer season 2 should be broadcast in France on Crunchyroll, but this has yet to be confirmed.
