Warning of developing severe thunderstorms for DMV this afternoon

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of the possible development of severe thunderstorms by Monday afternoon throughout the Washington DC area.

The agency also noted that damaging wind gusts are expected, as well as the possible fall of large hail beginning along I-81 into the DC metro area. The severe weather alert is in effect from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

“A line of showers and thunderstorms is expected to approach from the west and move through the night,” announced the NWS.

“Hot, humid Monday and with the arrival of a cold front (becomes the) perfect recipe to see the development of severe thunderstorms,” explained in a tweet Telemundo 44 meteorologist Joseph Martinez.

The NWS reported that temperatures will drop to the 60s and 70s “throughout much of the area.”

The community is urged to be aware of weather alerts in case it is necessary to seek shelter, according to the weather agency.
