Wawa Launches Shelfless, Electronics Pilot Store in Philadelphia

Wawa is trying something new at one of its Philadelphia locations: a shelfless convenience store.

The first-of-its-kind facility, located at 3300 Market Street in the University City neighborhood, is being used as a testing site, according to Wawa. It is the only one currently under this format.

The idea is to “test a full-service Wawa shopping experience with all items purchased digitally through the Wawa app or through in-store touch screens, with all orders placed by Wawa associates,” he told TELEMUNDO 62. Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce.

The newsgathering partners of the Philadelphia Business Journal were the first to report on the new Wawa concept.

The 24/7 store location is located near Drexel University. It first opened in 2018 and implemented “the newest and largest urban design prototype” of a Wawa in Philadelphia at the time, according to Drexel News. Now reopened in late July after being renovated.

The goal of the shelfless store is speed, Wawa said. “This will allow busy customers to order and get their purchases faster than ever before, delivered by friendly Wawa associates,” Bruce said.

Do you want to check it yourself? Download the Wawa app and head to University City.

Wawa looks forward to hearing feedback from customers and workers on the flow of the tech shop. “We are working to gather customer and partner feedback to ensure we create the best experience possible,” Bruce said.
