The Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin, Oleksii Makeiev, has three wishes for the West for 2023. They are not easy to fulfill.
The Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin, Oleksii Makeiev, expects Western support against Russian aggression to increase in the coming year. The Ukrainians want “more courage and determination from our allies and partners so that we can jointly implement all our projects and bring peace back to our continent,” he told our editorial team.
As goals for 2023, Makeiev named “the complete liberation of our country from Russian occupiers, the restoration of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the return of our compatriots home, the reconstruction of our country and further progress in integration into the EU and NATO”.
Ambassador: Ukraine still dependent on Western aid
Specifically, the ambassador called for weapons in particular. “In the face of constant Russian missile attacks on civilian infrastructure, artillery shelling of Ukrainian cities along the front line, and atrocious war crimes in the Russian-occupied territories, this aid must be stepped up and scaled up over the coming months to save even more civilians in Ukraine ‘ said Makeiev.
“Peace does not fall from the sky. It has to be fought for. And we Ukrainians do that on behalf of all Europeans.” On the question of a peace solution, he referred to the 10-step plan of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj.

Secondly, Makeiev asked for help for reconstruction, which is already beginning. “Today, transformers and generators are urgently needed to repair the critical infrastructure destroyed by the Russians,” he said. Ukraine is still dependent on Germany’s financial and economic support in the EU and the International Monetary Fund.
The Ambassador also appealed to Germany to take a leading role in Ukraine’s admission to the EU and NATO. This could be “groundbreaking” for Ukraine as well as for the European post-war order.
