A supermarket in Bergfelde in the district of Oberhavel caught fire across the board on Wednesday evening. It is believed that firecrackers were thrown in front of the building and a wastepaper basket or something similar caught fire and the fire then spread. That said a spokesman for the situation center of the dpa. The situation is particularly critical because the sale of New Year’s Eve fireworks in the supermarkets will begin on Thursday morning and there will certainly be such in the burning market.

The fire brigade is “working hard”. Two people were slightly injured by smoke inhalation. “We are fortunate that no one is seriously injured,” said the spokesman. The buildings around the supermarket are at a safe distance from the scene of the fire.

It is assumed that the firecrackers were thrown negligently – i.e. the fire was not triggered on purpose. Bergfelde is a district of the town of Hohen Neuendorf in the north of Berlin. (dpa)
