Most recently, Niklas Stark made the move from Hertha BSC to Werder Bremen. In the summer, the central defender moved to the Weser on a free transfer and, after initial difficulties at the start, prevailed in Bremen. The 27-year-old was in the starting XI in six of the last eight league games before the World Cup break.

Bremen boss Clemens Fritz remains vague
Clemens Fritz, Bremen’s head of licensing and ex-professional, keeps quiet about the rumors about a change in Mittelstadt: “We don’t comment on speculation. Of course we look around the market to see what could be possible in the summer and we also have our lists.” According to “Bild”, Mittelstädt is also on this list.
Mittelstädt lost the fight for the regular place at left-back at Hertha BSC to captain Marvin Plattenhardt in the summer. Since then he has only been used seven times in 15 Bundesliga games and only played two games for the full 90 minutes.
Mittelstädt was long regarded as a promising young player and in 2016 received the Fritz Walter Medal in bronze as one of the three best U19 players in Germany. He has been part of the professional squad at Hertha since 2015 and played a total of 147 competitive games in seven and a half years. Mittelstädt made his most appearances in the 2020/21 season, when he made 27 appearances for Hertha in the Bundesliga.
Werder has competition from the Bundesliga
In addition to Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg are said to be interested in the left foot. Mittelstädt is said to have earned 1.8 million euros a year at Hertha. In Bremen, the five-time U21 international would probably have to settle for less.
Should Mittelstädt switch to Bremen, Werder would have three left-backs in the new signing, Lee Buchanan and Anthony Jung. The most likely scenario would then be that Anthony Jung’s contract, which is also expiring, would not be extended.
According to “Kicker”, Mittelstädt is said to have thought about leaving last summer. There should have been specific inquiries, but in the end he decided against leaving. There are said to have been no talks about an extension since the summer, and none are planned. That could probably move Mittelstädt even more to a free transfer.
