The governor Axel Kicillof warned this week that could unfold the general elections of the province of Buenos Aires so that the people of Buenos Aires vote on a date other than the one that will be elected president, vice president and national legislators. What are the dates that are analyzed?

The presidential elections are on October 22. In the case of unfolding, the electoral schedule would allow the governor to establish that another five different Sundays be voted. The first of those is October 1; the last, the November 5th. Although the most probable date, should he go down this path, would be on sunday october 8. This date would coincide with the birth of Juan Domingo Peron.

“There are possibilities of advancing in a split. It has to do with why by law, we have to do the STEP together with the Nation, but the general election, our laws allow it, we can do it in a split way”Kicillof pointed out in recent days and added that he is debating the issue with all the sectors that are part of the Frente de Todos.

On April 15, Kicillof signed the decree that calls for primary, open, simultaneous, and mandatory elections (PASO) in the province of Buenos Aires for Sunday, August 13, simultaneously with the national elections. It is that Law 14,086, which regulates PASO, states that the Province cannot split these elections, because they have to go together with the national ones. To modify this, Kicillof should have sent a proposal to reform the norm to the Legislature, where he does not have enough numbers to achieve it.

However, according to the Buenos Aires Electoral Code, provincial elections can take place on a different date than national ones. This call must be made at least 90 days in advance and must be carried out between 30 and 120 days before the end of the governor’s current term, that is, on December 10.

From the Kicillof environment they maintain that the president will define what to do only after the closing of the lists, on June 24. There is a factor that will be key in that decision and it is whether or not Vice President Cristina Kirchner is a candidate.
