dr Florian Buehler, university lecturer at Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, spoke on Wednesday at “Vorarlberg LIVE” about artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is evolving rapidly. Florian Buehler, university lecturer at the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, together with colleagues from universities in Amsterdam and British Columbia, investigated the question of whether AI can even be creative.

How people react to AI art

“We examined how people react to art created by artificial intelligence,” explained the scientist on Wednesday at “Vorarlberg LIVE”. As part of the research work, the participants were shown artworks such as pictures, posters or music clips by AI and people and randomly named them. The researchers looked into the question of what impression art leaves on consumers and whether creativity is valued differently. It turned out that AI art was rated more negatively simply because of the name. “This led us to the thesis that AI art can be creative.” The scientist classified the fact that artificial intelligence causes fears and insecurity in some people as a kind of protective mechanism.

Overall, the discussion regarding ethical or philosophical boundaries is just beginning. It is important for the future to convey an understanding of technology and critical digital skills. In other words, to understand what artificial intelligence can do and what the effects are. Buehler assumes that AI will be found in all areas of life in the coming decades and will surprise positively. He sees technology as a tool to find solutions to climate or justice issues.
