Just a few weeks ago, we brought you our full review of 1899, the brand new Netflix series from the makers of Dark. The 1899 series brings us back to the end of the 19th century, on an ocean liner which transports passengers from all over Europe to go to New York and discover the New World. A seemingly quiet trip that will quickly take a new turn. Despite an excellent start, Netflix has already decided not to renew 1899.

1899 is (already) over

Indeed, available since mid-November on the American streaming platform, the 1899 series quickly settled into the top 3 of the most viewed series. The week of its launch, 1899 accumulated nearly 80 million hours of viewing, and was then overtaken by The Crown, before being outclassed by the Wednesday phenomenon the following two weeks.

A huge success for Netflix, therefore the 1899 series having monopolized the top 10 of the most viewed content on the platform until the last week of December. But then, why did you decide to abandon (so quickly) this successful series? This is the question that everyone is asking, and to which Netflix does not seem to be in a hurry to provide the slightest answer.

Series co-creator Baran bo Odar confirmed the news of the sudden cancellation via an Instagram post, a statement also signed by 1899 co-creator Jantje Freise. “It is with a heavy heart that we must tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have liked to end this incredible journey with a second and third season like we did with ‘Dark’. But sometimes things don’t go as planned. That’s life.

Another cancellation for Netflix, which has already sounded the death knell for other content such as First Kill, Destiny: The Winx Saga or even Warrior Nun. Still, unlike other content, 1899 seemed to have all the qualities required to quickly confirm a new season, not to mention a serious cliffhanger in the last episode. Enough to make many fans scream on the networks… According to some, 1899 would have attracted many curious people, with a first episode with a very large audience, but also spectators who would have quickly abandoned the series, which could explain the cancellation.

To start the year 2023, Netflix also wanted to take stock of the year that has just passed. The opportunity to (re)discover the series that have been a hit this year, but also the various films that have been successful, including Troll and Black Crab. Two French films also climbed into this top, namely Far from the Periph in fifth place and Tirelessly in the ninth.
