Elon Musk has indicated that production would likely begin in the summer of 2023. Except that mass production is not expected before 2024 anyway.

Tesla held its conference call on the company’s financial results this January 25. The Q&A section is always an opportunity to learn a little more about Tesla’s projects. It is in this context that Elon Musk answered questions about the planned schedule for the Cybertruck pickup.

After several years of postponements and delays, Tesla’s pickup should begin production in the second half of 2023, but it still seems a little unclear. In any case, mass production, to satisfy the very large number of reservations, is not expected before next year.

Among the questions from the investors retained, there was this one: is the production of the Cybertruck still planned for the middle of the year?

The question is not a trap, but Elon Musk’s answer, which could have been a clear “yes”, still suggests that everything is not completely ready on this subject. Between the “humm” of hesitation and the message sent by the CEO of Tesla in the end, one could doubt the answer: ” We expect production to start, I don’t know, maybe this summer. But, I always prefer to minimize the start of production, because the start of production is always very slow. It increases exponentially, but it’s still very slow at first. So I wouldn’t bet too much on the start of production. It’s more about when volume production actually happens, and that’s next year. »

Tesla Vice President Andrew Baglino completed Elon Musk’s remarks by stating that production equipment at the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas is beginning to be installed. Molding presses, general assembly and body shops would be in place. Tesla has assembled all the beta vehicles that will be used for the various tests. On the other hand, he also confirms that the ramp-up of production will not take place before 2024.

Given the record number of reservations registered by the brand, more than 1.5 million at last count, a good part of American customers will have to wait until 2025, 2026, or even 2027, before obtaining their Tesla Cybertruck. As for customers outside the North American continent, no details have yet been provided on the availability of the model on other continents and therefore on any delays in having their reservation honored.

Elon can’t wait to get his own Cybertruck

Elon Musk remains convinced that the Cybertruck will be an exceptional vehicle, unlike any other.

The conference on January 25, 2023 confirmed that the Cybertruck will be equipped with the latest generation of hardware (hardware 4) for FSD (Full Self-Driving) driving, while the other Tesla models are in hardware 3. According to Elon Musk , if the hardware 3 is safer than human driving by 200 or 300%, that of the Cybertruck will be 500 to 600% safer. We will wait to see the first tests to believe it.

Tesla has no real choice but to produce a model that is truly different from the competition, now that competitors have started to settle in the electric pickup niche with products in line with customer expectations. Tesla is no longer a leader in a vacant segment, the brand will therefore have to surprise and ensure to stand out.
