You are currently viewing WhatsApp: Channel function now available worldwide

WhatsApp is moving closer to its competitor Telegram with a new function.

Channels are now available in 150 countries worldwide. Organizations, clubs, companies and groups can use these public channels to send messages to followers.

Sensitive private data is safe

When introducing the function, WhatsApp particularly emphasizes its security. The new channels are completely separated from private messages in the app, so that no sensitive information can reach third-party contacts.

When searching for channels, a country filter is also applied directly. This means that only locally available and linguistically “appropriate” channels appear in search results.

Users cannot write anything themselves in channels, but can forward content and react to messages with emojis. WhatsApp also announces that it will expand the functionality in the future – but doesn’t reveal much, except that users will soon be able to create their own channels.
