In the Mexican imagination, the Callejón del Beso refers to the small space found in the state of Guanajuato, however, in Mexico City there are also records of a space dedicated to this gesture, located in the Azcapotzalco mayor’s office.

This place was designed in 2016 in order to honor the 100th anniversary of the birth of the composer Consuelo Velázquez. With colorful walls, full of flowers and hearts, this place was proclaimed as the Alley of the Kiss of the CDMX.

The place was inspired by the life and work of the Mexican artist, especially in her world famous song “Bésame mucho”, lyrics that were composed when she was just 16 years old.

The legend of the Alley of the Kiss

The emblematic place in the state of Guanajuato where every year thousands of tourists visit the space is inspired by a legend that dates back to the 17th century. According to the sayings, the alley of the kiss was the place of a memorable love story, so it is considered a special place.

The space is one of the most attractive centers offered by the Guanajuato government, especially in times of vocations and the El Cervantino festival.

Legend has it that in colonial times a woman from a noble family, known as Doña Carmen, met a humble man named Don Luis, which is why the young woman’s father did not approve of him.

The story relates that Doña Carmen’s father was a greedy and ambitious man, for which reason he forbade his daughter to meet Don Luis, whom she saw secretly.

Faced with anger, the young woman’s father locked her in a house that had a balcony overlooking the street and a few centimeters from there you could even touch the facade of the other residence. To see his beloved, Don Luis managed to enter the joint house, where he, with little effort, was able to kiss his beloved.
