The prosecution requested the provisional detention of the driver who hit a crowd in Bordeaux on Friday. The facts took place after an unauthorized car race, to which the driver had come as a “spectator”.
For the prosecutor of the Republic of Bordeaux, it is a “miracle” that the accident did not cause death. In a press release, it announced on Sunday that the driver who hit a crowd in a parking lot in Bordeaux on Friday evening will be referred.
The Bordeaux prosecutor’s office specifies that he will be brought to justice for involuntary injuries and “driving a motorized land vehicle compromising the safety of users or public tranquility”. The prosecution requested the provisional detention of the person concerned “given the gravity of the facts”.
These took place on Friday around 11 p.m., during an unauthorized car race in a Bordeaux commercial area. While they had come as “spectators”, the four men who were in the car at the center of the charges were about to leave when the driver “decided to do some laps at the wheel of his Citroën C3”, explains the public prosecutor of Bordeaux, Frédérique Porterie. The three passengers were also placed in police custody, since lifted.
Psychological trauma for the victims
The driver “acknowledged having taken the running ‘circuit’ even though he is neither a professional pilot nor even accustomed to this kind of exercise”, notes the prosecution.
He did two laps and started a third “when his friends asked him to stop”. He then lost control of the vehicle and hit the crowd present in the car park as part of the car race. 13 people in total were injured, they were all discharged from the hospital this Sunday but most evoke “a real psychological trauma”, according to the prosecution.
“In a state of amazement and for fear of a tragedy”, the driver fled before being caught by witnesses to the accident in a neighboring town, then arrested by the police. The man expressed “strong regrets” and his criminal record does not mention any conviction, according to the prosecution.
