A ticket was sold in California that resulted in a Powerball jackpot winner It had an estimated value of $1.08 billion.
According to the California Lottery, the winning ticket was purchased at the Las Palmitas Mini Market store in Los Angeles. Although the winner has yet to claim the prize, store owner Navor Herrera said he believes the winner is of Latino origin.
“I think it’s Latino. Because a lot of people in this area are Latino and my clients are Latino. Sometimes Koreans,” Herrera said, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Many people might think that if someone is a Latino who does not have documents to be in the country, they would not have the right to collect their prize, but the reality is that they could without any problem.
And it is that, according to the Powerball website, players do not have to be a US citizen or resident to play the lottery or to collect a jackpot.
The only requirement of the lottery game is that the players are over 18 years of age, regardless of whether they are citizens or not.
Prizes must be claimed in the state where the winning ticket was purchased.
To collect a lottery ticket prize, the winner only needs to show a valid ID and sign. Winners’ immigration status is not verified by lottery officials.
Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
Local federal and state taxes may apply to any prize you win.
