After seven and a half years on the market, Windows 10 will be gradually withdrawn from the shelves. Microsoft plans to stop selling certain editions from the end of January.

This is one more signal that Microsoft is moving on. Seven and a half years after the launch of Windows 10, the decision has just been taken to stop the sale of certain editions of the operating system from January 31, 2023. This decision, relayed by Tom’s Hardware on January 20, only applies to transactions on Microsoft’s official website at this time.

This judgment concerns the two most popular editions of Windows 10: the home edition and the professional edition. On their respective page, a new insert warns the public that the purchase page will disappear in a few days. Windows 10 Home costs 145 euros and Windows 10 Professional 259 euros. Other versions of Windows 10 are not mentioned.

Windows 10 remains sold elsewhere

The decision made by Microsoft here does not call into question, today, the availability of Windows editions elsewhere. After the date of January 31, 2023, it will be possible to recover a license on any other merchant site or in store. However, it is a trend that will increase in the months and years to come, because this OS is starting to seriously date.

Today, Windows 10 support is still active. The operating system is eligible for security updates until October 14, 2025. Beyond that, support for the OS will cease, except in very specific cases, inaccessible to the general public (for companies, Microsoft can provide tailor-made support, but paid for, with an additional cost year after year).

As early as 2015, Microsoft had anticipated the shutdown of Windows 10 on this date. However, seven years later, the OS is still present on more than two out of three computers. The company has however been offering Windows 11 since October 2021, but the scale is still low – barely 17%. After all, for many, Windows 10 gives all satisfaction. Why change now?
