If you’re using Windows 11 (and Windows 10), beware. Microsoft has just announced that Windows Defender was the victim of a bug since the last security update. Shortcuts to the software in the Start menu, taskbar, and desktop disappear.

If you are using Windows 10 and Windows 11 and have installed update 1.381.2140.0, Microsoft has just confirmed a new bug on Windows Defenderits native antivirus.

Broadly, this update detects and prevents malware from using VBA macros to call Win32 APIs. The problem is that a bug is causing Microsoft Defender to show false positives, removing application shortcuts from the Windows desktop, Start menu, and taskbar.

It is specified that this concern concerns all versions of Windows still updated, from Windows 10 20H2 to Windows 11 22H2. Note, however, that this issue has not been reported on Windows Server editions.

This flawed rule caused widespread disruption in corporate environments, with users unable to quickly launch their applications and Windows administrators scrambling to restore shortcuts.

Microsoft then canceled the change of the new signature update 1.381.2164.0. The tech giant nevertheless specifies that “ errors may be observed when trying to run executable (.exe) files that have dependencies on shortcut files “.

The Redmond firm announced that a patch was already being deployed on all affected versions, but the shortcuts will not be automatically delivered. ” You will need to recreate or restore these shortcuts through other methods Microsoft says.
