The most used function with this shortcut is probably the task manager. This actually allows force closing buggy or crashed software, that is to say that it no longer responds. In these cases, it is sometimes impossible to close it manually. Doing the Ctrl-Alt-Del shortcut therefore allows access to the task manager to close the application in question which is causing problems.

Twitter account “@PhantomOfEarth” noticed that a similar feature is being developed for Windows 11. As you can see in the screenshot below, Microsoft is indeed preparing a function to force close a running application. This comes in the form of the “End Task” option, which could be translated as “end of task” in French. Located above the “close window” function when you right-click on an application icon in the taskbar, this function would therefore force the closing of software that has crashed.

This feature was discovered in Windows 11 build 25300 which is reserved for developers. It should therefore arrive in an upcoming operating system update for all users. Moreover, Microsoft has not yet confirmed that the Ctrl-Alt-Del shortcut will really disappear. It is quite possible that the shortcut coexists with the new feature. While waiting to learn more, you can always do the shortcut Ctrl-Alt-Delete or right-click on the taskbar to open the task manager.
