Mold in living spaces is a nightmare for many people. Because it is not only unaesthetic, but also a health hazard and capable of causing allergies and respiratory diseases. Although ventilation systems can slow down the spread of mold, professional removal of the infestation and elimination of its causes are still essential.

Air purifiers have many benefits. They remove harmful mold spores, but also bacteria and viruses from the room air. They therefore provide excellent service – even in times of the pandemic. Devices based on plasma technology even get by without any chemicals or maintenance.

Air purifiers only remove mold spores

Graduate engineer Thomas Molitor, deputy technical manager of the ISOTEC renovation group, also points out the limits of their performance in connection with mould: “An air purifier only helps to rid the room air of mold spores, but it does not fight the mold itself and the cause of mold growth.” The expert therefore recommends: If mold appears, always consult a specialist who will clarify the specific causes of the infestation and develop an overall concept for mold removal.

Eliminate complex mold causes

Because the causes can be very different. For example, moisture often enters a building via defective roofs, gutters and downpipes, cracks in the masonry, insufficient drying out after construction work or as a result of burst pipes or flooding. Or construction errors such as thermal bridges lead to water vapor condensation on cold exterior walls along the structural damage areas.

Another reason for the formation of mold is often user behavior: insufficient removal of increased room humidity due to improper ventilation and insufficient heating, which in combination leads to the formation of condensation on cold walls. “Improper ventilation in connection with activities that generate a lot of moisture (showering, cooking, drying clothes, operating large aquariums, etc.) can increase the moisture in the building beyond the tolerable level,” the Federal Environment Agency states.

The conclusion of ISOTEC expert, graduate engineer Thomas Molitor: “Even if the use of air cleaners is definitely health-promoting, clarifying the causes and professional removal of the mold remain essential.”
