According to the ideas of the Berlin CDU, cars with combustion engines should hardly be on the road in the capital within a few years. “Our goal is to convert at least 75 percent of the vehicles in Berlin to emission-free drive types by 2030,” says a new traffic paper from the capital’s Christian Democrats. From the point of view of the CDU, a ban on cars with combustion engines in the city center is the wrong way to go.

At the same time, the Christian Democrats are against a nationwide reduction in parking spaces and against a city toll, as the Greens have in mind. In addition, the CDU demands in the concept paper “Berlin is there for everyone. Also for drivers” an investment offensive in road construction, a road damage register, shorter construction times, for example through the introduction of shift and night work, fewer street signs and the implementation of numerous road construction projects such as the expansion of the A100 city motorway.

“The car belongs to Berlin, and it should stay that way in the future,” said CDU top candidate Kai Wegner on Friday. “More and more car registrations speak a clear language: Berliners have a clear desire to move through Berlin by car.” Traffic in Berlin must finally flow again. Among other things, green waves, a functioning construction site management and an investment and renovation offensive are necessary for this. (dpa)
