Without favorite teams and with several surprises, the Women's World Cup promises some hot quarterfinals

This Tuesday the eight best teams for the Women’s Soccer World Cup in Australia and New Zealand 2023 were determined and from this next Thursday, August 10, the quarterfinals of a tournament that has been full of surprises will begin.

For the first time, 32 teams participated in a group stage that left several surprises: Two-time champions Germany, the legendary Marta’s Brazil, the ever-present Italy and defending champions the United States all fell out of the title race prematurely.

Germany was left out after Morocco’s victory against Colombia on the last day of their group, while Brazil was unable to advance from the same phase after a draw with Jamaica in a game that they had to win no matter what. Italy was left out after losing 3-2 to South Africa and The United States were unable to continue in the championship race after losing to Sweden in an agonizing penalty shootout in which player Megan Rapinoe missed a crucial shot.

In this sense, the selections of Japan, Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Australia, England and Colombia will be the protagonists of the quarterfinals of a World Cup that at this point could be for any team.

Latin America supporting Colombia

In what has been a dream World Cup for The Powerpuff Girls and their 18-year-old reference Linda Caicedo, the Colombian team will face one of the two favorite teams: England. The coffee makers are the only Latin American representatives in the contest.

Just four years ago Colombia did not qualify for the tournament and now, thanks to its 1-0 victory over Jamaica, the South American team qualified for the first time in the quarterfinals of a women’s World Cup and became the second South American team to reach that stage after Brazil, which has already reached the quarterfinals four timesbeing the last classification of the cariocas in 2011.
